2010 Summer Staff Opportunities
Campers love YSSC because campers love our staff. A typical summer staff numbers 70 and represent 25-30
colleges. On average, 60% of our staff returns each year. Our summer camp program provides an opportunity
for all staff members to interact with children, and also hone their skills in leadership, communication,
team building, teaching, problem solving, and putting Christian faith into action. All Staff must have
CPR certification (valid through entire ministry period) and must be able to articulate a personal
faith in Jesus Christ.
Counseling - 10 week ministry
Dates: Friday, June 11 - Friday, August 20
Position: Live-in counselor for up to 7 campers
Lead cabin Bible studies, instruct and/or lead a variety of camp activities.
Program - 11 week ministry
Dates: Monday, June 7- Friday, August 20
Position: Head Boys / Head Girls Counselors, Nursing Staff, Children's Worship Leader,
Boat Drivers, Lifeguards, Photography Specialists, Videographer, Backpack Guides, and Instructors for Nature and Crafts.
Operations - 13 week ministry
Date: Tuesday, June 1- Friday, August 27
Position: Food Service, Office Staff, Facilities and Grounds
Staff, and Childcare.
- Up to 70 positions are available. Preference will be given to those who are available for the full summer. Some staff will be asked to arrive earlier or stay longer.
- Staff will work a six-day week. Schedules are dictated by programming and the need to supervise campers 24 hours a day.
- Salary begins at $170 per week plus room and board ($260 per week value) for first year staff. Additional compensation for experience and special skills, i.e. lifeguard, RN, WFR, etc.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Candidates for counseling and program staff must have completed one year of college by June 2010.
- Applicants must have current CPR certification for entire ministry period.
- As each staff member plays a key role in modeling the love of God to campers, all will be asked to adhere to a summer code of conduct including appropriate language, dress, appearance (including tattoo and body piercing guidelines), and abstinence from alcohol, tobacco, and drugs.
- Applications will be accepted from December 1 - March 1 and must be submitted prior to scheduling an interview. Summer Staff applicants who have been selected for employment will be notified by March 31.
Position Descriptions
Counselor - At least 18 years old and entering second year of college. Provide care and guidance to a cabin of 5 -7 campers per session. Including direction in camp schedules, rules, activities and community living. Experience in teaching Bible study and behavior management desirable. Best if you enjoy outdoor life, are in good health, and desire to share your faith in Christ with kids.
Program Specialist - Upperclassman desired, with experience in supervising both children and peers. Provide broad program support & responsible for specialty activity such as arts & crafts, nature, and media (video, Audio/Visual). Must exhibit creativity, flexibility, good communication skills, and stamina.
Boat Driver - At least 18 years old and in college. Must have experience driving ski boats and have current lifeguard certificate. Responsible for boat driving and maintenance, and instructing campers in water-skiing, wake boarding, knee boarding and banana boating fundamentals as well as implementing safety rules. As part of Program staff you will also be asked to help with the daily camp program.
Backpack Guide - At least 19 years old and in college. Experience in wilderness mountaineering, orienteering, and rock climbing and the ability to teach these skills to campers. Experience in teaching Bible studies, counseling and behavior management desirable. Must have minimum current certification in Wilderness First Aid, however, Wilderness First Aid Responder (WFR) is preferred. As part of Program staff you will also be asked to help with the daily camp program.
Food Service - At least 18 years old and high school graduate. Ability to take direction, flexible, responsible, work with minimal supervision and work well with others. Responsible for food preparation and service as well as other kitchen chores. Must be healthy, have stamina and able to lift/carry up to 50 lbs.
Office Assistant - At least 19 years old and in college. Responsible for daily updating camp website, providing administrative support, communicating with camp families, assisting in office projects and chores. Ability to take direction and multi-task, responsible, well organized, work with minimal supervision and able to lift/carry up to 40 lbs. Word, Excel, and Internet literate. Strong communication skills desired.
Media Specialist - At least 19 years old and in college. Experience in video and digital photography. Ability to take direction and multi-task, responsible, well organized, and work with minimal supervision. Responsible for updating photos on the website, producing video and slideshows throughout the summer, and oversee and help set up media equipment as needed for events. As part of Program staff you will also be asked to help with the daily camp program.
Nurse/Infirmary Manager - Nursing student, RN, or EMT. Responsible for managing our health care facility (Club Med) and guest RN’s who rotate each session. Must be able to administer first aid, assess injuries, maintain files and supplies, communicate with local doctors and camper parents relating to medical cases, and train staff in general health and hygiene guidelines. Good organizational and communications skills necessary.
Facilities and Grounds - At least 18 years old and high school graduate. Ability to take direction, be flexible, and work well with others. You will have the opportunity to serve in a wide range of responsibilities pertaining to both the daily and long-term maintenance of camp. Daily responsibilities will include dish washing, maintaining and cleaning bathrooms and meeting areas, and upkeep of grounds. Over the course of the summer you will also regularly have the chance to learn to apply your skills in construction, building repair, landscaping, and other facilities and ground projects. No particular experience in any of these areas is required. Must be healthy, have stamina and able to lift/carry up to 50 lbs.
