Health and Safety
At Yosemite Sierra Summer Camp, the health and safety of each camper is a primary concern. To help ensure a healthy and secure environment in which campers can most successfully thrive, YSSC has the following procedures and safeguards in place:
General
- Accreditation by the American Camp Association which stipulates compliance with more than 350 health, safety and quality standards for facilities, personnel, administration and programming
- 24-hour camper supervision
- Mandatory check-in required for all visitors
- Annual insurance audit
Healthcare
- Camp Infirmary, “Club Med,” staffed around the clock by a Registered Nurse and full time manager
- Local pediatrician on-call 7 days/week
- Camp psychologist on-call 7 days/week
- Urgent Care Facility 15-minute drive away
- Valley Children’s Hospital 45- minute drive away
- Current health history and recent Physician’s exam required for all campers and staff
Staff
- Extensive staff interview process includes positive references and criminal background checks
- All staff members are CPR certified.
- All staff receive one to three weeks of job training.
- Kitchen supervisors are Food Safety certified.
- All pool and lake supervisors are Lifeguard certified.
- All ski boat drivers are Lifeguard and US Waterski Skill certified.
- All backpack guides and ropes course supervisors have a minimum of Wilderness First Aid certification.
- Safety awareness/emergency procedure training and observation conducted by leadership before and throughout summer
Facilities
- Facility maintenance is up to date
- Buildings equipped with cooling and heating systems for extreme weather conditions
- Buildings equipped with appropriate fire alarms, smoke detectors, extinguishers and exit maps
- Fire drills are conducted for campers each session
- Ropes course inspected annually
- Vehicle inspections prior to each use
- Camp entrance is gated
